The whirring sound of sewing machines broke the silence in the newly-redecorated fellowship hall at the First Congregational Church in Willimantic, CT. Members of the Interfaith Sewing and Service Group were busy preparing school bags for the Church World Service, clothes for needy children, sleeping bags for the homeless and tiny quilts for newborns.
Leftover fabrics from our Church Fair have been donated to this sewing circle for several years. Contributions of buttons, threads and zippers are given by outside sources, along with pieces of cloth.
It has been reported that the back-to-school outfits produced here make a fashion statement on the first day
of school.
From seam to seam, skilled hands are creating items that will provide comfort for many years.
My visit was a rewarding experience. With the use of a simple machine, women are producing goods for use in places near and far.
