Avery Dennison Post - 1963-1969
Avery Dennison Post began his ministry in Scarsdale on September 8, 1963. In "Remembering the Scarsdale Congregational Church," Lois Seulowitz, as part of the celebration of our 75th anniversary as an independent church, recalled:
Rev. Avery Post was an activist in the areas of racism and peace, and his sermons were often followed by talk-back sessions for people to respond to the issues raised. I found it exciting and stimulating, and was moved by the fact that people could differ on the hard issues of our time and still be a church family. Oh, we lost a few members to the more conservative churches in the area, but mostly people stayed and struggled together.
Post resigned in 1969 to become the President of the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ (UCC). Later he became the fourth president of our denomination, the UCC.
Church membership was 1,281 with average worship attendance of 506 in the annual report for 1962.
In the annual report for 1969 church membership was 962 and average worship attendance was 310.
