As discussed in the Our Staff section of the tour, there is a well-qualified Head Teacher and Teacher in each classroom. There is also a Floating Teacher who assists in each classroom as needed.
Each class offers a rich curriculum, appropriate to the age. There are also many enhancements to classroom instruction, some of which are described below.
Miss Gigi, our Music Specialist, sings with the three- and four-year-olds twice a week and with the two-year-olds once a week. She teaches the fundamentals of music and the joy of singing.
Creative Movement with Miss Posey is offered to three- and four-year-olds. The children delight in using their bodies and imaginations.
It's especially nice to get a visit from The Nature of Things, our environmental education program. The children learn about animal habits, and each child has the opportunity to touch the live animals -- or watch from a distance, if they prefer.
The school year features various field trips such as to the Fire Station or to the Greenburgh Nature Center.
Holidays are an important part of our program, as they teach the ch ildren to learn about and celebrate various cultures and religions. The Fours' Thanksgiving Feast is an annual celebration of the many things for which we give thanks. The children cook food and invite their parents to share in their repast. The Twos and Threes are Indians and Pilgrims, respectively, and enjoy a feast together prepared by the Threes.
All classes celebrate Hanukah and Christmas at our beloved December Holiday Tea. The children's delightful performance is followed by a visit from jolly old St. Nick and refreshments.
To celebrate "The Week of the Young Child", we usually have a special guest visit the school, such as a dentist or nutritionist. In addition, we always try to have a "9-1-1 Safety Class" for the Threes and Fours.
In the spring the Threes hatch their chicks, but all classes share in the wonder of their hatching.
The Fours' graduation is a bittersweet time in June. With handmade caps, the young scholars march into Dyckman Hall to Pomp and Circumstance and wait patiently to receive their diplomas.
A final important element of our program is the involvement of parents. The school is structured around the belief that the fullest value of pre-school can come only as parents are involved and growing, too.
The Nursery School Board is composed of parent volunteers and the Nursery School Director. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in board activities as well as to attend Parents' Night and other programs of interest.
Parents are most welcome to visit the school at any time. Just call us at 914-723-2440 to arrange a visit.
