Religious Education For Our Children

Education

Sixth Graders working with First Graders on September 17, 2000
We offer formal religious education for children ages three through the eighth grade. Every child is on a spiritual journey, a journey that can be greatly enriched by the care and guidance of others. Shown here are some of our sixth graders getting ready to help first graders understand what it means to be baptized.

We in the Scarsdale Congregational Church School hope to provide ways for each child to know the stories of Jesus, to feel close to God, to acquire the tools for articulating that feeling, and to learn how to live in this world as a person of faith.

The elements of this journey include:

Time With Children
We invite children of Church School age to attend the first portion of worship for our special "Time with Children". Given by one of the ministers, this time is set aside to provide an experience of education and worship with the entire faith community. The "Time With Children" concludes with the Lord's Prayer, after which the children are dismissed with their teachers to their classrooms. We provide a class for each grade level. Each class is staffed by volunteer teachers, like yourself, who believe that supporting the education of our children is one way to serve and contribute to this community.

Whole People of God Curriculum
The Church School uses the Whole People of God curriculum. It is Bible-based and designed to creatively present the stories of our faith. Our goal is to help children understand and experience what it means to live as a Christian in today's world. Additionally, we invite and encourage students to participate in our wider church activities so they can experience the full life of the community.

Child Care
Child care is available for 0 - 3 year-olds from September through May, and the nursery room is equipped with plenty of toys. A professional child care worker is there to care for and engage the children throughout the worship hour. Parents may leave their preschool age children in the nursery before worship begins. Parents who wish to keep their infants with them may, if needed, use the air conditioned, carpeted Archibald room in the lower sanctuary. TV broadcast of the service is available there with toys, crayons, papers and books suitable for the very young.

Confirmation Class
Our Confirmation Class is a two-year cycle for seventh and eighth graders. It is team-taught by the Senior and Associate Ministers. Through discussion, Bible study, and special events, the students gain a wider view of the role of religion in our culture. The aim is to further assist and encourage the students to articulate their beliefs in a meaningful way.

A Positive Experience
We believe Church can be a positive experience for children of all ages! If there is some way in which we can better serve you, or if you are interested in offering your time and talent to the Church School, please contact me by phone at the Church Office at 914-723-2111 or by confidential e-mail.
