For the last several years, members of our Youth Action Committee have spent their spring vacations participating in an outreach project to the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. For a week, the teenagers are involved in a challenging work program that has included building and installing beds in homes on the reservation; cleaning, renovating and painting the houses of tribal elders, including tribal Chief Oliver Red Cloud (grandson of 19th century Chief Red Cloud); learning how to construct and then building (and sleeping in) a teepee; and helping to maintain the site of the Wounded Knee Memorial.
