Guidelines for Serving Communion in the Sanctuary

Our Governance, How To..

Serving communion

Four persons assist the clergy in serving communion during worship in the sanctuary. Prior to worship, a member of the Worship and Music Committee will have prepared the bread and "wine" and placed it on the communion table in the front of the sanctuary.

The four Communion Servers precede the ushers when the ushers bring the offering to the front of the sanctuary. Bring your Order of Worship with you. After the blessing of the offering, the ushers return to their pews; the Communion Servers sit in four chairs that have been placed in front of the front pew. They remain there until the clergy nod to them at the beginning of the Communion Service.

Two Communion Servers stand to the left of the communion table; two stand to the right. After blessing the bread, the clergy will hand each Communion Server a plate of bread. The four Servers should remain in their places until all four have their plates. Then two Servers go to the outer aisles; two go down the center aisle. The clergy will serve communion to the choir.

Communion Servers must use their judgement as to whether a communion plate should be passed to the other end of the pew or whether it should be returned to the aisle where it started. This will depend on the number of people in the pew and the ability of those persons to reach across long distances if the pew is sparsely populated.

When all four Communion Servers have finished serving the persons seated on the first floor, two of the Servers should serve persons in the balcony. One should go to the Archibald Room, below the sanctuary, where there may be parents with young children.

When all persons have received communion bread, the four Communion Servers should stand at the back of the center aisle awaiting a nod from the clergy that they should return to the front of the sanctuary.

The clergy will

Follow the same procedures for the communion "wine". Be especially careful in serving the "wine", for the full trays can seem heavy for some in the congregation.

At the end of the communion service, sit in the chairs at the front of the sanctuary. Do not return to your pews.

After the benediction, please assist in picking up the communion glasses. In the "Flower Room" on the Parish House side of the sanctuary are boards with holes in them. Use these boards to hold the empty communion glasses you pick up from the pew racks. When you have finished picking up the glasses, return the boards and glasses to the Flower Room where a member of the Worship and Music Committee will process them.

Thank you for helping in this service of Holy Communion.
