Head Usher Check List
|
Thank you for agreeing to be the Head Usher. You may ask your companion ushers to assist you
with any or all of the following tasks. Your cooperation in assuring each task is completed assures
that other worshippers can focus on the service of worship and not on these details.
Please arrive 20 minutes before worship to greet all who come to worship and to agree with your
fellow ushers how you will line up before taking the offering.
Sunday Box This box is prepared by the Church Office staff and should be on the south table
in the narthex. If it is not there, check the shelves over the coat rack or the Church Office. In
it you should find
- Regular and large print orders of worship.
- Extra copies of Bulletin.
- Guest Book - Place on writing stand with pen.
- Boutonnieres - Give one to each usher.
- Name Tags - For ushers and greeters.
- Attendance forms and pencils.
When the necessary items have been obtained from the Sunday Box, it should be returned to the shelf over the south coat rack. Not left on a table.
Lights/Sound
- If lights and amplification systems are not on, check with the minister(s).
- Place audio-aid radios/headsets on the north side table with the large print
orders of worship. The briefcase with this equipment is in the ushers' closet in the narthex.
- Check that the closed circuit TV system in the Archibald room is functioning, and that the room is ready for use should a person with a small child wish to use it during the service.
Altar Area
- Light candles 10 minutes before service. (Lighters are in both pulpits.)
- Place four offering plates on the altar table (or organ console if no altar table).
- Place the basket for children's food offerings on the floor in front of the altar table.
- Make sure the flower room door is closed.
Santuary
- Open or close windows as needed.
- In the summer, position and turn on fans as needed.
Narthex
- Keep the main outside doors closed throughout the service.
- Be alert to the need to have the sanctuary a secure place for the belongings of attendees.
- Close all rear aisle doors as soon as feasible after the choir procession.
- After worship begins, seat all persons from the side aisles, not the center. Please do
not seat latecomers during the organ interlude following the children's talk, during prayers,
anthems, or reading from the Bible.
Attendance
- During the Greetings and Announcements, count everyone in the sanctuary including the choir and the children.
- Record these counts with the date on the Attendance Form from the Sunday Box.
- Place the completed Attendance Form in an offering plate.
Recessional At the start of the last hymn, open the center door for the choir and ministers.
After Care
- All ushers help remove papers and other items left in pews. Return hymnals and Bibles to pew racks.
- Extinguish candle(s), close windows, turn off fans.
- Place boutonnieres, unused orders of worship, guest book and other items in the Sunday Box.
- Place audio-aid items in the briefcase and return it to the ushers' closet.
- If Membership Committee has not collected sign-in sheets, pick up today's sheets, place
them in the Sunday Box, and place Sign-In Pads at the center-aisle end of each pew.
Thank you - from the Worship and Music Committee.
