Christmas Eve

The Scarsdale Congregational Church offers two services on Christmas Eve. There is a family service at 5:00 p.m., and a more traditional service of candlelight and carols at 10:00 p.m.

worship7The family service is designed to work well with children from toddlers to early teens. The length of the service is carefully managed to 30-40 minutes. The centerpiece is a pageant performed by the church school students that recreates the story of Jesus' birth. It is a very popular annual event that draws a significant number of visitors from outside the congregation.

Our traditional Christmas Eve service, which is conducted by candlelight, follows a structure similar to our Sunday morning service, but features seasonally appropriate hymns and litanies, and a Christmas-themed sermon. The traditional service ends at about 11:30PM, and is followed by a one hour reception in the Parish House with refreshments. Despite the late hour, dozens of people stay for the reception each year. It is a good time to reconnect with young adult members who are on break from college or have moved away and are visiting for the holidays.

In years when Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, Sunday morning worship service is usually canceled. We do not have services on Christmas Day, unless Christmas Day falls on a Sunday.
