Rev. Joya was ordained to ministry in the United Church of Christ in 2017. She is passionate about religious education, social justice, and cultivating meaningful faith practices for children/youth/adults. She believes that Christians are called to put God's 'love-into-action' through centered acts of kindness, service, and justice. Joya is a native New Yorker with a background in (faith-based) community organizing, (faith-based) global humanitarian aid, and parish ministry. She has earned degrees from Oberlin College (2002) and New York Theological Seminary (2012). She is married to Charisa Kiyo Smith, and together they delight in all the joys of parenting two young children.
